Does anyone here have experience with using a dash mounted camera to
    capture video?

Over the past 5 years I have realized that I love to travel. There have
been multiple occassions where things have happened (like a family of
turkey crossing the road, or a moose!) where the moment has passed before I
am able to stop, get a camera out and snap a photo.

After my trip last year, I thought it might be a good idea to look into an affordable, easy to use dash cam that would take video of a better quality
than the ones that simply capture the action during an accident. :) One
where I could enjoy the video later and/or be able to pull some stills from.

I have done a little research. It does sound like there are plenty of
choices. The brand I have heard the most about in the past is Go-Pro, but
I have not seen much about them show up in my research.

It would be nice if it could be removed from the car and still capture
video in the event that I wanted to stop and hike a ways to see something.
I can always do that with my existing camera or phone, though.

I've owned several dash cams and action cameras (e.g. the Sony line that is a competitor to the GoPro's).

The dash cams are somewhat of a different breed as they're designed to run for very long periods of time, usually attached to the vehicles 12v DC power, and usually over-writing old videos automatically when the storage (e.g. SD Card) is full. While most action cams (e.g. GoPro's, Sony's and like) are designed for rugged use outdoor with superior video quality (to dashcams) and run off of LiOn batteries or sometimes an attached DC power source (e.g. USB cable).

If you're wanting the best quality, then action cams are probably what you seek, but look for features that support your use case as a dash cam (e.g. auto-on/record/off, over-write old video files or support for very large removaable media, external power source). I recommend the Sony's:

I've got this one (except I have the 2017 version):

    https://www.amazon.ca/VIOFO-A119-1600P-Camera-Logger/dp/B07SWYVYJ7/

Here's a sample of some of the footage:

This one doesn't run on batteries, so it will need to be wired in. When I first got it I had it plugged into the cigarette lighter, but then I wired it into the fuse panel with this:

    https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B01MU51HAC/

So now when I turn the car on, the dashcam starts up automatically and shuts down when I turn the car off. You can wire it into another fuse if you want it to record all the time (e.g. Parking Mode).

All in all, it has been very reliable. One thing I like about having the GPS model is it gets it's time from the satellites, so the time/date is always correct, in addition to showing your location & speed on the recording.

Pro Tip: If the model you choose records to a MicroSD card, make sure you get a card that can handle temperatures inside your car. I went with a Samsung card as it advertises it being "temperature proof":

I have one in the car.

I've looked at the videos on the SD card once.
IIRC The Video Files are split in sections, I can't remember if it is
One Minute or several Minutes in each File.

I get Email Newsletters from Redshark News - https://www.redsharknews.com/
and have seen Articles about the Go-Pro there.

I went to their website and made a Search to send some Links to You.

I first entered go-pro and some of the Results had sords with either the letters go in them or the letters pro in them.

So I made another Search having Quote Marks around the words - "go-pro"
and got some of the same links in the Results listing.

The machine I would likely be using to download/manipulate the video with is a linux based machine. All of my machines are. :) So, if it requires proprietary software that only runs on apple or windows products, that is another concern.

I read up on a similar camera that apparently uses a proprietary format. That is too bad because it sounded like a neat camera.

    Thanks!

GoPro are still pretty popular, and are known for being durable. The models I've seen were standalone cameras, however I imagine they can be used as a dashcam with a proper mount.
