Who had a hit with this song?

"I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)"

    a. Heart
    b. Genesis
    c. Madonna
    d. Aretha Franklin and George Michael

    ***********************************

This came out when I was music director for WABK-FM. First time I heard it,
I told the program director that it was to be a future #1 song on the
charts. He argued with me that it was a piece of crap and would flop... to
put it nicely <G> I told him one reason it would do so well was because of
how Aretha's vocals just overpowered George Michael's and made her shine
as she should. In a few weeks it was #1 on 4 different charts concurrently!

1986? I missed hearing that one. It sounds totally unfamiliar
to me. I might have to agree with your prg director.. there's
nothing overly special about it. Songs tend to do well that can
distinguish themselves from others competing for attention.

Aretha *does* have a distinctive voice. She'd probably stand
out in any duet or remake and do well.

Yes '86 was the year. There's numerous factors that determine how well a
    song may do:
    - mass appeal sound
    - recognizable rhythm
    - uniqueness
    - hot artist/group

For example, back in that era if Madonna released a song of her just
belching, it'd be a top 10 hit because of the fact it's Madonna. The particular song in the question however had 3 of the 4 elements:
    - it has a mass appeal sound
    - it was a good "toe tappin" tune, good recognizable beat to it
    - George Michael was a teen throb and Aretha had her last hurrah comeback
at that time - and she was hotter than ever too.

It's fate was sealed to be a chart topper. A no doubter.

Absolutely! Coming off her hits such as Who's Zoomin' Who and Freeway of Love this was a great way to cap her chart topping hits. With this duet, she starts off just sort of keeping pace with Michael then she builds it up and nails him. He would have been better off just letting her finish solo.

I agree this is a massive song and well worth the time to listen to :)
Have always enjoyed it and agree the vocal combo was a genius move.
