... Side Effects Of This Medicine may include Death.
I used to be a Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT; it's
trademarked) and in my initial studies to become a CPhT and
then in my continuing studies afterwards, I noticed
something: many, many medications list death as a side
effect. I'm saying this straight-faced and sober.
The US is now the only country in the world that allows drug advertisements in mass media.
Ever notice that a drug commercial on TV talks 15 seconds
about the benefits of the drug and 45 seconds with side
effects and warnings? Makes you wonder.
I heard that Australia does too.
We dont have "prescribed" medicines advertised on TV. We do have
"migration" and "headache" medicine (so panadole and friends) advertised.
On our advertisemnts, there isnt a quiet fast voice that warns you that you
will die, or your arms will fall off, etc, if you take the medicines :)
Don't you mean the other way around: 45 sec on benefits and 15
sec on effects and warnings (and often in micro print)?
Or as my late wife noted, "printed with ant feet". :P Not
to mention that it's up there for less than 5 seconds.

The producers of those commercials don't gain my respect. Often
the Disclaimer or Warnings section is so tiny that there is
plenty of spare space to afford to make the text larger.

There was a quiz with kids around here in which they showed
them a car comercial with one of those warning texts on the
bottom of the screen which scrolls at lightspeed. The goal
of the quiz was to get any of the kids to manage to read
the text. None of them managed to claim the prize.
